When for the first time I knew Bali in 1990, I feel strange to see Balinese who were very obedient to Hindu. In Japan, indeed, we are mostly Buddhists, however there are less people who speak about, or being contemplated in religion. The longer I live in Bali, the more clearer the difference between Japanese and Indonesian. In Japan, we are often asked, "Do you believe in God?". That was a common question, but in Indonesia, the question is, "What is your religion?". For me that was very different. Despite of our such kind inner feeling w e Japanese still feel that there is 'a gift from above', we voice our gratefulness before eat. We don' t know whom we thank for, but certainly it is not for the chef. In such mistrusted condition, we still feel something that rule the world. In Bali praying is called 'bhakti'. Nowadays, at situation of that kind, demonstrating a protest, campaigning, stealing, robbing, humiliating & who can stop these mess ? Although we are not the only powerless ones, we still can pray. My work is not a kind of religious one, because all of us 'both who has religion or not' are still human, we still have empathy, we still can pray. As a foreigner here, it is quite difficult to get involve in politics or economy in Indonesia, but everyday I expect and play for everyone's peace and happiness. Praying is one of the solutions of this such world's circumstances. Midori Hirota |
